A marshmallow roasting pit is one of the coolest things that you can do in your own backyard. Building this is really quite simple and you can do it in a single afternoon. Here is a step-by-step guide to building a marshmallow pit.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

The first step to building a marshmallow pit is to find a proper location. To do this, you must ensure that you are not going to be digging the pit anywhere near gas lines or septic tanks. This can make a huge headache for you if you skip this step so take the time to research and find out where it is safe to dig.

  2. Step 2

Once you have a safe area, dig a circular or square hole approximately two feet deep in the ground, being careful to slope the sides. You can dig the marshmallow pit as wide as you would like but an ideal size is about 4 feet across. This will allow you to also use the pit as a burning pit.

  3. Step 3

Once you have the hole dug, take some weed killer and kill off a circle around the pit (or square as needed) about one foot in width. This is to prevent sparks from catching the grass on fire around the edges and also to clear a spot for rocks or bricks.

  4. Step 4

It is optional to line the pit with concrete or brick, but it certainly is worthwhile to do so if you plan to make the pit permanent.

  5. Step 5

Now, add a bundle of cedar chips along the bottom of the pit. You can also use lava rocks for added feature but you'll get a great smell from the cedar.

  6. Step 6

Place bricks or rocks around the edges of the pit for added visual effect. Stack them about one foot or so off the ground.

  7. Step 7

Enjoy your homemade marshmallow roasting pit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lining your pit will help with cleanup and make a cleaner fire.
  • Spend some time playing with the size until you find the right one for you.
  • Killing off the grass around the edges is a must.
  • Be careful about letting children near the pit.
  • Do not dig until you are sure what you are digging into.
