Your electric hand drill was manufactured to last quite a few years, but that is determined by how well you maintain it. If you use your electric hand drill often, odds are that it gets tossed around and ultimately takes a beating it was never made to take. If you want to protect your investment and prevent being injured by a damaged piece of equipment--then you should learn how to maintain your electric hand drill.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean your electric hand drill once you are finished using it. It only takes a few minutes and it can help maintain the drill's proper functionality and help reduce the chances of rust building up on the chuck. A dirty drill never works as efficiently as a clean one.

  2. Step 2

Safely wrap the electrical cord. If you leave the electrical cord hanging loose it can get caught in other pieces of equipment and the insulation can ultimately crack or begin to show signs of wear, making for a very dangerous situation.

  3. Step 3

When you store your electric hand drill you will always want to remove the bit that is currently attached to it. If you leave the bit in the drill it could rust and cause problems with the chuck down the road. Plus, if you are not looking, the bit could very well cut you if you happen to accidentally come across it later on.

  4. Step 4

Never leave the electric hand drill plugged in when you are not using it, never carry the drill by its power cord and if you have the original carrying case the drill came with, use it to store the drill. If you no longer have the carrying case, install a hanger in a dry location in your garage so the drill will be kept out of the way, but in close proximity should you need it.

  5. Step 5

That is all it takes to keep your drill running smooth and efficiently for years to come. Keep it clean, store it safely--and it will always be there when you need it!
