Things You'll Need:

Step 1
Prepay inside the cashier's booth for your gas or swipe a credit card right there on the gas pumps. On the type of pump that is digital and there is a front-facing selection of octanes to choose from, first select your octane; a red light should come on. The higher the octane; the more money you will pay per gallon. Unscrew the gas cap on your vehicle. Remove the gas nozzle that corresponds to your chosen octane and pump your gas. I usually choose 87; the most inexpensive of all.

Step 2
On a gas pump that is not updated like those you might find in remote or rural locations, the gas nozzle will usually be located hung on the side of the gas pump. Sometimes the gas amount cannot be preset on these old-fashioned pumps and you have to stop the gas yourself and not go over what you have paid.
-
Step 3
Go inside to prepay for your gas and tell the cashier which pump you'll be using.
-
Step 4
Unscrew your gas cap, lift the gas nozzle and slide the lever toward you. You will hear the gas pump turning on--at this time place gas nozzle into gas filling hole in your vehicle and deliver your gasoline.

Step 5
Don't forget to keep an eye on the dollar amount to make sure you do not go over the amount you have prepaid with the cashier.
