Step 1
Collect your thoughts. Think about what you want to say to your lover before you write it. Doing this will help you organize all the ideas you have before you put something potentially embarrassing on paper.
-
Step 2
Free write and do some word association. What was your best memory of him or what words make you think of her? Write those down so you have a sort of outline of things to say.
-
Step 3
Avoid rhyming. After looking over your notes, check for possibly embarrassing words and song lyrics. Unless you are a famous poet or songwriter, these generally come off cheesy and will feel stilted if that isn't normally who you are.
-
Step 4
Look at all the notes you have made and think about getting a letter from the one you love that says something similar. Is it too mushy? Do you want to laugh at it in a bad way? Just imagine receiving it and hopefully that will help you decide what parts to keep and where to start over.
-
Step 5
Make a final copy and read it aloud. The best way to test your work is to read it aloud. Not only will you find any technical errors but you will also be able to really hear what it sounds like. Don't be afraid to write a few drafts and don't feel bad if you need to start over. Writing a love letter is an art and you should take pride in your craft.
