How to Turn Your Kayak Without a Rudder

  1. Step 1

Paddle out onto the water. If you've never kayaked before, this is your chance to get comfortable with your paddle and your boat.

  2. Step 2

To turn right when you have forward movement, you have a number of options. The first and easiest is to paddle on the left side only. The second and more difficult manuever is to paddle backwards on your right side. To do this push the paddle from behind you in the water to in front of you. The third option is a combination of the two: first paddle backward on the right side, then paddle forward on the left side. This is to do a sharp, dramatic turn as it will slow your boat significantly while turning it. The last option is to paddle forward on both sides, but do a stronger, faster stroke on the left.

  3. Step 3

To turn left when you have forward movement, just do the opposite of a right turn. You may choose to paddle on the right side only, or paddle backwards on the left side. Again, you may combine the two. Finally you may also opt for the final choice, to continue paddling on both sides but do a stronger, faster stroke on the right.
