Step 1
Make sure that the pitcher and catcher have all the signs memorized. This way, when a pitch out is called, neither play will become confused.
-
Step 2
Both the pitcher and catcher should act as they normally would. The pitcher should be sure to check the base runner and do any other things that he regularly does while on the mound. It's important that neither play give anything away when planning a pitch out.
-
Step 3
When delivering the pitch, the pitcher should throw a fast ball far outside of the strike zone. A pitch all the way to the opposite batters box is not inappropriate for a pitch out.
-
Step 4
As soon as the pitch is thrown, the catcher should immediately get out of the crouched position and move to either the right or left (depending on the direction of the pitch). The catcher should be standing with his feet in a throwing position (one in front of the other) when he catches the ball.
-
Step 5
If the runner advances to the next base, the catcher should immediately throw to the teammate covering that base. If the runner does not attempt a steal, the catcher can also throw to the teammate covering the base where the runner is positioned. For example, if the runner is on first and does not advance, the catcher can throw the ball to the first baseman in an attempt to pick off the runner.
