Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the hot dog. A true Chicago dog must be steamed or boiled. Some area restaurants are known to char—or heavily grill--their dogs. Yet while I’ll gladly consume these char dogs for consumption, these franks are simply inauthentic.

    • 2

Open the bun. Chicagoans, while some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, are very particular when it comes to their food. With this in mind, not just any bun will do. It must be covered in poppy seeds.

    • 3

Place the wiener into the bun and add the condiments. An authentic Chicago dog is topped with onions, mustard, bright green relish, a spear pickle, peppers, tomato wedges and just a little bit of celery salt. Do not put ketchup on your hot dog.
