How to Drive Without Yelling at Your Kids

Remember driving in peace and quiet? Those were the days. Now that you have kids and the kids are enjoying some fierce sibling rivalry, peaceful driving is no longer a part of your life. This is probably one of the most challenging things you can try to do as a parent--get in the car with your kids and drive anywhere without yelling at them when they start fighting. The best way to curb the yelling is to do as much as you can to prevent the fighting before it starts. When the fighting does start, as it inevitably will, try the new ideas listed here to maintain your sanity and harmony in the car.

Instructions

    • 1

Do not let kids sit right next to each other. If possible, leave an empty seat (or van row) between them.

    • 2

Put activity books and packs of crayons in the car. This should keep them busy.

    • 3

Listen to music. If they start fighting, turn the music up louder.

    • 4

Rent books on CD at the library. The kids can get really addicted to listening to a story and the ride is pleasant for everyone. Some books can last for weeks.

    • 5

Every time you feel like yelling, lean back and try laughing instead. Or singing. You kids will stop fighting and watch you.

Great advice! Also I've pulled over when the fighting gets too intense and refused to move until there were apologies and quiet.
