If possible, blot your stains as soon as they happen. Do not rub the stain into the fabric, but instead put pressure on the stain using an absorbent cloth that will draw the stain from the fabric. Add cold water to the stained area and blot it again.

When you can remove the clothing item, lay it on a hard surface and use an absorbent cloth to work on the stain from the inside so as not to rub the stain deeper into the cloth using a bit of laundry detergent or a stain pre-treatment.

Treat stains on white cotton clothing with bleach stick, allowing it to sit for no more than fifteen minutes as bleach stick can burn a hole in fabric

    • 4

If your stain is oily such as pizza grease, chocolate or butter use a grease solvent to pre-treat the item allowing it to sit for a couple of hours after massaging it into the fabric.

Condiment stains such as ketchup, mustard and Chinese sauces need to be pre-treated, washed in cold water and allowed to air dry until you are sure the stain is completely gone.

Ink stains will slowly fade from clothing with a few washes. To remove an ink stain I like to place it on a paper towel on top of a hard surface and pour a bit of laundry detergent on it. I then press more paper towels onto the back and the excess ink will draw out of the fabric. When no more ink comes from the fabric, pre-treat it and wash it. It may take a few pre-treatments and washes to fade the ink stain.

Tips & Warnings

  • Treat your stains as soon as possible.

  • Never put stained clothes in a dryer until you are sure the stain is gone.
