Step 1
The first thing to consider when deciding how to light a garden is what type of light to use. Some gardeners find that they prefer lights that shine on specific areas of their garden as this helps to highlight the beautiful flowers and plants they have growing. Others opt for more subtle lighting such as Christmas lights strung up behind the garden on a fence or lattice or even some type of lighting that simply outlines the walkways. You can determine what you prefer by talking with your local gardening experts or visiting a Botanical garden at night if they have one in your area.

Step 2
Where the power sources for your garden are located is also something to consider when trying to light gardens. Most gardeners run their lights from the power provided through their garage or their greenhouse. If your garden is too far away from an electrical source and you don’t want cords strung running throughout your yard or garden, you might consider using solar lights. While most don’t provide enough light to serve as a display light, they are excellent if placed to light paths and walkways through your garden. They simply run off the power of the sun, thus they don’t have any cords to deal with.

Step 3
Should you be fortunate enough to have a power supply close to your garden, you can use almost any type of outdoor lighting in your garden. Of course it is important to consider where the cords will be located in order to protect them from water. If they are made specifically for outdoors they should be okay to withstand the rain and water associated with your garden. However, for those that are not, you may consider having some type of pipe or tube to protect them as they run throughout your garden.

Step 4
Finally when determining how to light your garden you should use your own personal preference. Most likely in your mind you have the image of your ideal garden, and you should choose lighting that will compliment it. Doing so will not only allow you to thoroughly enjoy the long summer evening spend outdoors, but it will also make your garden one of your favorite places to be.
