From Quick Guide: Carpet Stain Removal
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dab of dish soap
  • Baking soda and water solution
  • Paper towels
  • Warm water
  1. Step 1

The first thing to remember about stains is not to scrub them even deeper into your carpet by scrubbing hard. A gentle blotting action is all that's needed to halt penetration into the fibers. Take a few paper towels and remove the food that has caused the stain. After the removal of obvious food, run some warm water and dissolve two teaspoons of baking soda into it. Sprinkle the solution onto the stain and leave for three minutes.

  2. Step 2

Take a few paper towels at a time and blot the solution-treated area. Keep using clean paper towels to complete this task. While treated area is still wet, apply a dab of dish-soap. Sprinkle drops of warm water onto the area and blot with more paper towels. Keep blotting with fresh paper towels until the paper towels blot clean.

  3. Step 3

Fold a wad of clean paper towels and place them on top of the damp area. Put a heavy object on top of the wad of paper towels and leave there for a couple of hours to draw up all traces of moisture from the carpet. After removing the heavy object take a hairbrush and restore the pile to your carpet. If the stain is still visible repeat Step 1 through Step 3.

Tips & Warnings
  • The faster you notice a stain and treat it, the higher success rate you will have in total stain removal.
  • Test an inconspicuous piece of carpet before treating with baking soda and dish soap.
