For a straw cowboy hat, remove surface dirt with a brim brush or whisk broom. Then, wipe the surface of the hat with a clean, damp cloth. Starting from the left side of your hat, gently rub the dampened towel counterclockwise towards the back. On the underside, rub clockwise instead.

For a felt half, remove surface dirt with a simple brim brush, in the same manner as above (starting from the left). Use a dark colored brush for dark hats, and a light brush for light hats. Otherwise, you may transfer colors between hats. Remove stains with a fresh sponge and a light touch-scrubbing can leave bald spots. Treat grease stains with a fine dusting of cornstarch then brush off several hours later, after the grease has been absorbed.

For both straw and felt hats, pat gently with two inches of masking tape. This will help to remove any remaining lint.

Periodically, turn out the sweatband to dry. This allows your perspiration and hair oil to evaporate, instead of being absorbed.

Tips & Warnings
Rest your hat upside-down on its crown, not its brim. Resting your hat on its brim may cause it to lose its shape. Furthermore, handle your hat by the the brim, not the crown: dirty or oily hands can soil the fabric.
