Reviewing erotic romance books is not really the same as reviewing even regular romance novels. Erotic romance is very hot right now in the publishing industry, and effectively reviewing it can sometimes be difficult. Not all erotic romance is going to be to your liking. Because of this, being a good objective reviewer is critical to both providing a fair review to authors and maintaining a level of professionalism. Reviewers of erotic romance who are not objective don't last very long in the business.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Erotic romance novel
  • Computer
  • Word processing program
  1. Step 1

Read the book cover to cover. There are reviewers who think nothing of skimming erotic romance books, especially if for some reason a particular scene makes them cringe or offends their sensibilities, or they don't care for the story line or the author's writing style. Any book reviewer worth his salt knows that there are going to be books he'd rather not read; however, he is still obligated to do so.

  2. Step 2

Jot down a quick list of what you liked about the story. It is important to be specific and to be totally honest with yourself. Anyone can say she liked the bedroom scenes, but a good reviewer will say what she liked about the bedroom scenes and why. She will also talk about what she liked that had nothing to do with the erotic portions.

  3. Step 3

Jot down a quick list of what you didn't like about the story. Again be very specific; point out exactly what you didn't like. Saying that you don't care for the BDSM scene when you knew going in that you would be reading books with this lifestyle choice being presented is not enough.

  4. Step 4

Think about what sort of rating you want to give the erotic romance you've just read. Make a bullet list of why you think it deserves that rating. You should be able to explain in a couple of sentences why you've given it that rating. Most reviewers use a scale of 5 to 1 for rating, with 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.

  5. Step 5

Using your list of likes and dislikes, as well as your reasons for whatever rating you decide on for the erotic romance you are reviewing, to the best of your ability write an objective review.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be fair. If you don't care for the orientation or lifestyle choice of the characters, put that aside and look at the non-erotic elements, the actual story telling and the author's writing style. You will find over time that even if you don't care for the erotic elements, you may still like the story itself. If you can find yourself in this position when thinking critically about an erotic romance, then you have become an objective reviewer.
  • While most places that you can review for will take your likes and dislikes into account when assigning books to be reviewed, be aware that there will be times that you may get material you are less than enthusiastic about. A good reviewer rises above such things and reads and reviews objectively regardless.
