Neckties add sophistication and polish to a man's suit, but many men don't know the correct way to tie a necktie. You don't have to use a clip-on. It is easy to properly tie a necktie by following step-by-step instructions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the tie around your neck with both ends hanging down the front of your chest. The wide side of the tie should be on your left side.

  2. Step 2

Cross the wide end over the narrow end to form an "X" near your neck.

  3. Step 3

Pinch the "X" with your fingers and thumb pointing up toward your chin.

  4. Step 4

Wrap the wide side completely around your fingers. Bring the end up behind your fingers through the "V" formed by the tie.

  5. Step 5

Push the end of the tie through the space where your fingers are.

  6. Step 6

Tighten the knot until it rests comfortably against your neck. The wide end should be longer than the narrow end.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a problem with the narrow end hanging below the wide end, begin your knot with the wide end hanging slightly lower.
  • Tying a necktie is a skill that takes practice. Don't get frustrated.
