Step 1
Secure a proper plunger. For only a few dollars extra, buy a toilet plunger with an extended cup, one that extends below the rim. This allows the plunger to grip the bowl more easily.
-
Step 2
Fill the plunger with water as much as possible, and center it over the drain. If the toilet is nearly overflowing, you may either want to scoop out a few cups of the excess water, or have cleaning supplies at the ready.
-
Step 3
Form a seal with the bowl using a few short up-and-down strokes. When the plunger has locked into place, you should feel resistance as you pull up. Be careful not to splash water over the rim and onto the floor.
-
Step 4
Rapidly pull up and push back down four or five times, without breaking the seal with the toilet. You should hear a gentle 'swooshing' sound from within your plumbing. Afterwards, pull the plunger slightly out and away from the opening.

Step 5
Repeat until the clog breaks up and is sucked down the pipe.
