Knowing how to plunge a toilet is a requirement for modern life. With the proper technique, however, this unpleasant task can be over in mere moments.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Secure a proper plunger. For only a few dollars extra, buy a toilet plunger with an extended cup, one that extends below the rim. This allows the plunger to grip the bowl more easily.

  2. Step 2

Fill the plunger with water as much as possible, and center it over the drain. If the toilet is nearly overflowing, you may either want to scoop out a few cups of the excess water, or have cleaning supplies at the ready.

  3. Step 3

Form a seal with the bowl using a few short up-and-down strokes. When the plunger has locked into place, you should feel resistance as you pull up. Be careful not to splash water over the rim and onto the floor.

  4. Step 4

Rapidly pull up and push back down four or five times, without breaking the seal with the toilet. You should hear a gentle 'swooshing' sound from within your plumbing. Afterwards, pull the plunger slightly out and away from the opening.

  5. Step 5

Repeat until the clog breaks up and is sucked down the pipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Especially difficult clogs may require a toilet auger.
  • Do not flush the toilet if the water sits above its normal level. This may cause flooding.
