How to Type on a Keyboard

Typing on a keyboard is a task that has become necessary in terms of know-how in today's world. Practically everything is done on computers and knowing how to accurately and quickly use a keyboard is very important. This article describes the basics for those just learning to use a keyboard.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Start the word processing software on the computer so that a window appears that allows typing.

  2. Step 2

    Position the left hand by placing the base of your palm just at the base of the keyboard below the space bar.

  3. Step 3

    Place your four fingers on the A, S, D and F keys in that order while keeping your palm gently rested on the base of the keyboard. Make sure not to be pressing down with any of your fingers; instead, have them rest just above the keys or gently on them without applying pressure.

  4. Step 4

    Place your thumb gently on the space bar under the B key while keeping the other four fingers on your left hand on the A, S, D and F keys.

  5. Step 5

    Place the base of your right at the base of the keyboard while keeping your left hand in position.

  6. Step 6

    Place your four right fingers on the J, K, L and colon/semi-colon keys while keeping the base of your right palm and your entire left hand in position.

  7. Step 7

    Place your right thumb on the space bar just below B key while everything else on both hands is in position.

  8. Step 8

    Look at the positioning of your hands and memorize where each key is under your fingers.

  9. Step 9

    Practice typing these keys on the word processor while watching your fingers press down on them and then practice typing these keys without looking.

  10. Step 10

    Practicing typing full words and sentences by using each finger to type keys in their surrounding areas. (For example: the left hand types keys Q, W, E, R, T, Y, Z, X, C, V, G and sometimes B. The right hand types keys Y, U, I, O, P, N, H and sometimes B.

  11. Step 11

    Practice typing all these keys with whichever fingers feels most comfortable hitting those corresponding keys.

  12. Step 12

    Remember that practice makes perfect and it is a challenge to start. It will, however, get much easier the more practice you have.
