Your baby's umbilical cord has finally fallen off and you are ready to give your baby his first bath. Like most new parents, you are probably feeling a little apprehensive about her first bath.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baby shampoo
  • Baby body wash
  • Sponge pad
  • Soft washcloth
  • Dry towel
  • Clean diaper
  1. Step 1

Be prepared. Before placing your child in the bathtub, organize the items you will need in an easy-to-carry basket and place it beside the tub. Make sure you have baby shampoo, baby body wash, a soft washcloth, a dry towel and a clean diaper on hand. You may also want to consider a sponge pad that aids in keeping baby from slipping around in the tub. Also, before starting, make sure that you leave your baby's diaper on until you are ready to wash in that area in order to prevent any accidents!

  2. Step 2

Start at the top. Using the washcloth, gently squeeze water on your baby's head, but be sure to guard your baby's eyes to prevent water and soap from stinging. Massage a small amount of baby shampoo into the scalp until foamy. Then use the washcloth again to repeatedly squeeze water on your baby's head until all of the soap is gone.

  3. Step 3

Work downward. Using a separate washcloth than you used in Step 2, softly wash your baby's face with water only. Then apply a small amount of baby body wash and clean behind the ears, then under the folds in the neck, working your way down the chest and back, under the arms and around the diaper area. Leaving the diaper on, wash all around the diaper and down the legs and feet.

  4. Step 4

Take off the diaper. Now that you have washed every other part of your baby, it is finally time to take off that diaper. Use the washcloth as you would use a wipe, or you can just use a wipe instead. This step should be done the fastest since a naked baby could possibly have an accident in the bath!

  5. Step 5

Pat the child dry. Using a hooded towel, wrap your baby into your arms and gently pat her dry. You may want to add lotion or powder once your baby is completely dry. Don't forget to put the clean diaper on your baby pretty quickly after you have finished drying! You may also want to have clean pajamas or a onesie ready in order to prevent your baby from catching cold.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the water temperature isn't too hot by testing it with your elbow or wrist before placing the baby in tub.
  • Have all of your needed items on hand before undressing your baby in order to prevent any unnecessary fussiness.
  • Play games with your baby during bath time and sing songs to them so that they will enjoy their bath more.
  • Never leave your baby alone in the tub, even if there's just an inch of water!
  • Don't allow your baby to play with the soap or shampoo because they will probably try to put it in their mouths.
