How to tow a trailer
It’s amazing how many great activities are within reach, yet they require you to bring your own equipment. Camping, boating, four-wheeling frequently require that you tow a trailer packed with fun behind your vehicle. You do not need to avoid these activities simply because you do not have experience towing. It’s easy to learn if you start slowly and practice.

1
Hook up the trailer to your vehicle. Ask a helper to stand near the tongue of the trailer to guide you back and align your hitch ball with the trailer. Close the latch/lock on the hitch.
-
2
Plug in your lights and attach safety chains to your car. Ask your helper to check your lights; tap the brakes and signal a right and left turn to confirm that your trailer lights are working.

3
On the road, reduce your driving speed. Make corners wider than you normally would, because your trailer will swing in a shorter arc than your car.
-
4
Give yourself extra time and distance to stop; the trailer's momentum and weight will tend to push you.

5
Backing a trailer is tricky. When you turn your steering wheel, your trailer will go the opposite direction. Back slowly and make small corrections. Use your side mirrors on both sides to watch behind you; because your trailer is in the way, you’re not going to see much if you look over your shoulder. Your helper can help guide you into your spot.
