How to Make an Even Hem

Making an even hem can be one of the trickiest parts of sewing a garment, or anything else for that matter. Before you tear your hair out, here's a simple way to make sure you get an even hem every time you sew.

Things You'll Need

• Item to hem
• Sewing machine
• Scissors
• Cardboard
• Sewing pins

Instructions

1. Make sure the item you're going to hem is absolutely even where you will hem it.

2. Trim the hem area to make it even, if necessary.

3. Cut a piece of cardboard the width you want the hem to be and make it 6 to 8 inches long.

4. Fold up the hem, and slip the cardboard into the hem.

5. Slide the cardboard along as you stitch the hem, this will ensure the hem is even all the way around.

• Use the cardboard to help you pin the hem in place before you stitch.
