When you wax your board you want to start with a clean slate. If your board is new and unwaxed, the first wax you need to choose is an ordinary base wax. If your board is used and just needs a new wax job, remove the old wax using a wax comb and rub it off with a towel. After the old wax is removed, coat the board with the base wax.

To choose a wax for your board, you need to know what kind of water you are going to be surfing in. If the water temperatures are around 68 degrees and up you want to choose a tropical wax. Tropical wax is the hardest type of wax. If you use tropical wax on your board and you surf in cold water, you will probably be slipping around too much.

If the water temperature where you are surfing is a little cooler than a tropical climate, somewhere between 65 and 70 F you can use a warm wax. Warm wax is slightly softer than tropical wax.

If your water temperature falls into slightly cooler temperatures between 60 and 68 F you should use a cool wax or temperate wax.

    • 5

If you're braving the cold waters you will need a cold wax, sometimes called winter wax. Cold wax is the softest surfboard wax and gives you a nice grip in the chilly waters. Using a wax that is too hard or soft for the waters you surf in will mean a lot of slipping and sliding that could injure you or others.
