On more advanced film shoots, you may be using multiple cameras to cover one scene. While more complex and involved, it just requires a bit more organization. After you add and synchronize your clips for Multi-Camera editing, you can record and re-record your footage from all cameras (up to four) and then make the necessary editing adjustments for your final project.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Footage from multiple cameras
  • Firewire
  1. Step 1

First you must add your clips to a sequence and synchronize them. Next record your initial edit and view in the “Multi-Camera Monitor.”

  2. Step 2

To play your synchronized clips in the Multi-Camera Monitor, select the sequence from your Timeline panel and then choose “Multi-Camera Monitor” from the Program Monitor panel menu. It is the little arrow at the upper right hand corner of the Monitor panel. You can either use the playback controls from the Monitor window, or the keyboard shortcuts. Use the playback keyboard shortcuts: J = reverse, K= stop, and L=forward.

  3. Step 3

To rerecord your multi-camera edits, position the current-time indicator to the point or frame before the edit you want to adjust. Next, start the playback in the Multi-Camera Monitor. When the playback reaches the point in the edit you want to change, switch the “active camera” by clicking on the camera’s small preview in the Multi-Camera Monitor.

  4. Step 4

The active camera’s preview border switches from yellow to red. When you are finished editing, click the “Stop Playback” button in the Multi-Camera Monitor.

  5. Step 5

To adjust multi-camera edits in the Timeline panel, you can replace a clip with footage from another camera. Select the clip in the Timeline panel and then go to the Clip Menu, and choose Multi-Camera, and then choose the Camera’s corresponding number (1, 2, 3 or 4). You can use any of the standard editing tools to make changes to the clips in the Timeline panel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Playback keyboard shortcuts: Hitting "J" several times will play in reverse faster and hitting "L" several times will play forward faster.
