How to Add and Synchronize Clips for Multi-Camera Editing with Adobe Premiere Pro
On more advanced film shoots, you may be using multiple cameras to cover one scene. While more complex and involved, it just requires a bit more organization. The first step in editing for multiple cameras is to Capture, add and synchronize your clips for Multi-Camera editing.
Instructions
-
Add Clips to a Sequence
-
1
First capture all the footage into the program. You can use any type of media in a multi-camera editing session, including footage from various cameras and from still images.
-
2
Add your clips to a Timeline sequence by going to the File menu, then New and then Sequence.
-
-
3
Assemble your clips into a sequence that is no more than four video and four audio tracks. Note that you can add more than one clip to each track if you have more than one tape per camera.
Mark Clips
-
4
The next step is to mark your clips. You will first need to mark the sync points by setting the same numbered marker for each clip. Use your current time indicator by moving it to the exact frame on each clip that you want to sync to.
-
5
Next go to the Marker menu and Set Clip Marker. Choose either Next Available Numbered, which will set it to the next, lowest unused number, or Other Numbered, which will open a dialog box where you choose a number between 0 to 99.
-
6
Repeat the above steps for each clip, using the same number marker for each.
Synchronize Clips
-
7
Select the clips you want to synchronize, by clicking on it and holding down Shift to select more than one track. Note that if one track of a linked audio/video pair is unselected, it will be out of sync with the rest.
-
8
Go to the Clip Menu and select Synchronize. Choosing “Clip Start” will synchronize the clips at their In points. Choosing “Clip End” will synchronize clips at their Out points. Choosing “Timecode” will synchronize clips to a specified timecode. Choosing “Numbered Clip Marker” will synchronize clips to a specified numbered clip marker. Choose the marker number to use from the Marker pop-up menu.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure when you are taping or shooting that each camera records a sync point. You can do this using a clapper slate or other similar technique. Keep each camera recording the whole time to synchronize.
