Alternative nostril breathing has been practiced for centuries. It helps purify the body and calm the mind and it has been know to have a balancing effect for the left and right hemispheres of the brain, too.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sit on a chair or on the floor and keep your back as straight as you can.

  2. Step 2

Use your right thumb to cover up your right nostril. Let your middle and forefingers curl into your palm. Let your pinky and ring fingers stay together in the air.

  3. Step 3

Keep the right nostril closed off with your right thumb while breathing in for 4 counts through your left nostril.

  4. Step 4

Then close off the left nostril with your ring and pinky fingers. Hold both nostrils closed for 8 counts.

  5. Step 5

And the end of the 8 counts, release your thumb from your right nostril and exhale out of that side for another 8 counts.

  6. Step 6

Inhale through your right nostril for 4 counts and close both nostrils. Hold for 8 counts and release the ring and pinky fingers from your left nostril while exhaling for four counts.

  7. Step 7

Inhale through your right nostril for 4 counts and close both nostrils. Hold for 8 counts and release the ring and pinky fingers from your right nostril while exhaling for four counts. Repeat the full cycle 10 times.
