It looks kind of cool when you see someone in a television commercial or action movie scale the side of a wall as if they were Spider-Man, but in reality it is a lot of tougher. It takes a lot of practice to learn how to climb, and the best place to start is at a climbing gym or climbing wall. Read on to learn how to rock climb.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A harness
  • A climbing partner
  • Climbing shoes
  • Water
  • Rope
  1. Step 1

Start with a climbing gym. You will get real training and guidance. Bring a friend or have a guide there act as your belayer.

  2. Step 2

Put on a harness and climbing shoes.

  3. Step 3

Have the guide show you the best ways to attach your ropes. Even though, you are climbing under your own power, the rope is there to catch you if you fall.

  4. Step 4

When you are getting ready to climb, yell to your guide/partner "belay on." If they respond "belay on" then you are free to climb.

  5. Step 5

Rock walls simulate what the side of a mountain could look like. Make sure to use your feet and hands equally. Don't over extend your body.

  6. Step 6

Once you get to the top, rest. Then holler to your partner that you are coming down.

  7. Step 7

Kick your feet against the wall, and let your partner released the line slowly so you can get some distance as you come down.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice, practice, practice.
  • Make sure you know the basics before climbing outside a gym.
  • Rub chalk on your hand beforehand to keep them dry while climbing.
