How to Network at Parties

Parties, social gatherings and special events are not only fun to attend, they are great places to network and pass out your business card. Though socializing and fellowship should be the primary purpose of a party, you can use these events as chances to better your business or gain a new client. Learn how to network tactfully at parties.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Introduce yourself to anyone and everyone you see. If you're at a wedding reception, shake the hands of friends and family members on both sides of the family. Keep a bright smile on your face and extend your hand, shaking theirs firmly.
Step2
Seek out individuals that are alone. If you see a guest without a date or nursing a drink by themselves, introduce yourself and start chatting. They may have flown into town for the event and have more business contacts than you may think. Ask them what they do for work and see if you have anything in common.
Step3
Be friendly. If you're an introverted individual, step outside for a cigarette break. Chances are you'll meet a few other smokers that are involved in the business world.
Step4
Hang out by the bar. Order a drink and talk to anyone mingling near the bar. This is a great location to strike up a conversation and get to know new people.
Step5
Pay attention. If you're talking to another party guest that mentions their "sister's law firm," inquire about it. You may just be looking for a firm to practice law with, after all. Be cordial and polite, never overstepping your boundaries.
Step6
Pass out your business card, but do it with taste. Don't give it to everyone that you meet at the event. Be selective. If your dialogue touches on the subject of work or business, feel free to hand it to them.
Step7
Follow up with the person within a few days of the event. That way, your face will be fresh in their mind.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always treat party guests with respect. If you cannot stand politics, but meet an avid political person, discuss the subject tactfully.
  • Never have too many drinks when networking at parties. The last thing you want is slurred speech and the inability to stand still.
