Things You'll Need:
- Mountain bike
- Protective gear
- Balance skills
- Bike riding skills
- Practice
-
Step 1
Get used to the weight of your mountain bike. You first must get used to what your bike weighs and how your weight is distributed before you will be able to perform a wheelie.
-
Step 2
Practice balancing the front end while stationary. The best way to do this is to sit on the bike with your feet on the ground. Stand up so your butt is off the seat and slowly lift the front handle bars. Notice how the weight shifts when you do so. The key to performing a wheelie while in motion is properly adjusting your weight as you pull up on the front handlebars.
-
Step 3
Try popping a small wheelie while riding slowly. Now that you are accustomed to how the balancing and weight shifting will work, try riding very slowly and pulling up a short and balanced wheelie on the handlebars while riding. Practice this over and over again before trying to perform a big wheelie.
-
Step 4
Go for the gold and bust that wheelie. Once you have become used to how the balance and weight shifting works with smaller wheelies, it is time to go for the gold. Remember to wear protective gear and keep practicing. You will eventually grasp the hang of it.
