Betta fish are a fun, easy to take care of pet that the whole family can enjoy. This How To article explains how to set up a betta fish tank and then care for it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Betta fish
  • Fish tank
  • Beta fish food
  • Water plant
  • Decorative rocks
  1. Step 1

Purchase a fish tank, decorative rocks, water plants, betta fish food and a betta fish at a local pet store.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that the purchased tank is large enough to house the betta fish, decorative rocks and the water plants while also allowing room to spare. The extra room is needed so that the betta fish has areas to swim around.

  3. Step 3

Bring the items home and fill the tank with the decorative rocks. How many rocks is up to you but take care to not fill the fish tank more than 1/8 of the way full.

  4. Step 4

Place the water plant into the tank and make sure to not bury it in the rocks. The roots have to be exposed because the fish will feed off this part of the plant.

  5. Step 5

Fill the tank 3/4 of the way full with water that is room temperature.

  6. Step 6

Carefully pour the betta fish into the tank after it has been placed in an area that does not get much sun.

  7. Step 7

Feed the betta fish three pellets of betta fish food per day.

  8. Step 8

Make sure to provide visual stimulation (such as waving a finger in front of the fish) every day.

on 11/17/2009 how do you clean a beta fish tank? does this mean just replacing the water and cleaning the rocks, or do i need to get a filter?

on 7/30/2009 One question if you buy a filter for your fish tank, how often would you need to clean out the tank?

on 10/27/2008 Thank you Tammym. I wanted a simple fish to take care of and for my 3 year old to have. I went to Pet Smart and purchased the fish and the bowl. The salesclerk said that she has one and feeds him once a week. She changes his bowl about every 2 weeks. Ok, this will be easy. NOT. The beta food directions said to feed him twice a day with 2-3 pellets. That's better than 1/week. As for the bowl being clean, 3 times a week seems more like it as my water keeps getting a little cloudy by day 3 of the week. Thank you for your suggestions. They make more sense.

on 10/2/2008 Please!!! There is more to taking care of Betas. First of all, you must wash the gravel, tank etc. before you begin to set up the tank. The water should be treated with conditioner (aval. at the pet store) to balance the PH and counter the chemicals that are in the water. This water should be at least 24 hours old...meaning put the water in a covered bowl for 24 hours before using it. Place the fish, still in the bag that it came in, into the prepared tank for an hour or so before putting it directly into the tank. The tank should be cleaned 3X a week.
