Ankle sprains are one of the most common joint injuries. Repeated sprains can cause permanent weakness, but properly wrapping an ankle can provide support until the sprain heals.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Elastic wrap
  • Safety pin
  1. Step 1

Wrap the bandage one full turn around the ball of the foot, starting at the toes.

  2. Step 2

Continue to wrap the bandage in complete turns around the arch of the foot, being careful to keep the pressure on the elastic even as you wrap.

  3. Step 3

Bring the bandage diagonally across the forefoot when you reach the heel. Bring the bandage behind the ankle and pull it down over the front of the ankle and under the arch of the foot in a figure-8 pattern.

  4. Step 4

Continue to wrap in a figure-8 pattern until you reach the top of the ankle.

  5. Step 5

Complete the wrap by making one complete turn around the lower part of the calf. Secure the bandage with a safety pin or clip fastener.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the bandage pulled taut, but not so tight that it becomes uncomfortable.
  • The entire foot and ankle should be covered by the wrap, except for the toes and heel, which should be left exposed.
  • If your toes turn blue or purple, the wrap is too tight.
  • Loosen the wrap at night before you go to bed.
