Yoga is a very vast science which involves different postures specially designed to keep the body functioning in optimal condition. Just as marital arts, tantric yoga is not first about postures. Rather, it is about self-discipline, humility, mental determination and an innate thirst to know the Universal Truth. Tantric yoga is an advanced level of yoga. Beginners need patience, knowledge and experience before they can practice tantric yoga.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One highly accomplished guru
  • Quiet room (well lighted and ventilated)
  • At least 30 minutes of uninterrupted time
  • Mental readiness
  • Humble mental attitude
  • Yoga mat
  • Yoga outfit

    Getting Started

  1. Step 1

Find a guru. It is important to find a guru with whom you feel comfortable. This search might take a while, and therefore be prepared to spend anything between 1 to 6 months on this task alone. This is one of the most important steps since your success in achieving spiritual fulfillment through tantric yoga is totally and directly dependent on this.

  2. Step 2

Learn the theory behind tantric yoga. You want to achieve perfection, do not even think of starting the asanas (postures) without fully understanding the meaning, ethics and requirements of tantric yoga. Let your guru guide you on this trip.

  3. Step 3

Ready yourself for learning the asanas. It is customary to take a shower before practicing yoga. This not only invigorates the body, it also acts as a symbolic purification method. Ensure that you will not be interrupted for the next 30 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Use this sequence of asanas with the permission and guidance from your guru: the snake pose (bhujangasana), half-tortoise pose (ardhakurmakasana), yoga pose (yogasasana), self-massaging, corpse pose (shavasana). Pay special attention to the breathing techniques. This order of asanas is specially designed for beginners. As you would master these postures, your guru will take you to the next level. The asanas have not been described in more details here because you should, not under any circumstance, do yoga the first time unless you have the supervision of an accomplished guru. This could otherwise be extremely dangerous.

  5. Step 5

Gradually return to normal. After completion of the session, relax for 15 to 20 minutes before returning to your regular day-to-day routine. Do not undertake any type of strenuous exercises for at least half an hour.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always have a warming-up session before you start your yoga session.
  • Keep a fixed time for the session, preferably at the crack of the dawn.
  • Never practice yoga after meals. Leave at least 4 to 5 hours after a major meal before you practice yoga.
  • Do not go outdoors immediately after you completed a session of tantric yoga.
  • Women who are menstruating should not perform any of these yogic postures.
  • Do not touch any metal objects or water for at least 15 minutes after your practice.
  • Pregnant women need to consult with their gurus for advice.
