Need a set of pedals to complete your bicycle? Here's what you need to know to choose the right pedals for your riding style.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Different types of bikes require different types of pedals. Begin your search by focusing on the pedals that fit your particular style of bike--road bike, mountain bike or BMX.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you want clipless pedals, which are designed to work with special shoes that click into them; toe clips, which have straps that hold your feet in place, or flat pedals, which offer up a basic, no-frills design.

  3. Step 3

Explore the pedal options in your chosen category. The best pedals will feature an open, easy-to-clean design and be easy to lubricate. If you're shopping for clipless pedals, also look for a set that allows you to adjust the entry and release tension--important for a hassle-free and safe ride.

  4. Step 4

Once you've narrowed your search to a few pedal models, go online to read consumer reviews. You can often find these right on cycling merchandiser's websites.

  5. Step 5

Then, make your selection, and put in some practice time with your new pedals before hitting the road (or trails).

Tips & Warnings
  • If you'll be purchasing BMX pedals or flat pedals, consider opting for a set with built-in LED lights for added safety.
  • Pedals come in a variety of colors, so have a little fun with your selection.
  • Learning how to click in and out of clipless pedals takes practice. Spend some time mastering this skill before heading out.
