At the first sign of impetigo, begin a handwashing regimen. Wash your hands any time they come in contact with impetigo affected skin. Trim your fingernails and avoid scratching the affected area. Scratching and poor hygiene can cause impetigo to spread.

    • 2

Mix one part carrier oil, such as vegetable oil, with one part tea tree oil. Shake well and store in a cool dry place.

    • 3

Using a cotton ball, apply the oil mixture to the affected skin. The skin should be treated three to four times daily. Dispose of the cotton ball by wrapping it in tissue. Wash your hands thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not apply undiluted tea tree oil to the skin. It can cause stinging and irritation.

  • Tea tree oil is effective, but it works slower than oral antibiotics. It may take three to four weeks before your impetigo improves.

  • If you impetigo gets worse, call you doctor.

  • Wash all sheets, washcloths and all fabrics that come into contact with impetigo affected skin.
