If you suddenly discover you're out of baking chocolate, and need it in a recipe, try these hand substitutions, instead.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Substitute 1 oz. square of baking chocolate by mixing 3 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 tbsp. butter. You can also mix 3 tbsp. carob powder with 2 tbsp. water.

  2. Step 2

    To substitute one oz. of pre-melted baking chocolate, mix 3 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa with 1 tbsp. vegetable oil.

  3. Step 3

    To substitute 6 oz. of semi-sweet chocolate chips, mix 9 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder with 7 tbsp. sugar and 3 tbsp. shortening.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can chop up a semi-sweet or milk chocolate bar to substitute for chocolate chips, as well.
