There's no denying the stunning visuals of a modern Apple computer. Ever since the original release of Macintosh OS X, every other major platform has tried to clone or imitate the Mac interface. If you love the look of a Mac but like the operating system of your PC, you can make some alterations to make your Windows PC look like--or turn it into--a Mac.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Dock program
  • Skinning program
  • Mac OS X theme
Step1
Download a dock program. The most frequently used and striking feature of OS X is the smoothly scrolling dock. There are a number of programs available on the Windows XP platform that imitate this effect. The more popular choices are ObjectDoc (which comes in freeware and pro versions), MobyDock and RocketDock. See the Resources below for a link.
Step2
Install and run the dock program.
Step3
Configure the dock program to your liking. Dock programs are extremely versatile and there can be a lot of options to consider. Take your time to configuring the dock program, adding shortcuts, drawers and applets that you'll use.
Step4
Add the taskbar--the list of open windows--to the dock. To complete the transformation, you'll also need to select the dock option that hides the Windows XP taskbar.
Step5
Download a Windows XP skinning program. A skinning programs changes the appearance of various features. In Windows, everything from window decorations (the blue title bars) to widgets can be skinned. There are a number of programs that can do this, including StyleXP and WindowBlinds (see Resources below). Since Macintosh OS X is one of the most commonly imitated interfaces, whichever program you choose is very likely to have an OS X theme.
Step6
Choose an OS X theme. If your skinning program didn't come with a Macintosh OS X theme, you can check popular skinning sites like WinCustomize and Customize.org for an OS X theme. See the Resources section below for a link.
Step7
Apply an OS X theme, following the directions of your skinning program. Once applied, your Windows XP PC will look almost like a Macintosh.
Step8
Find Macintosh-like wallpaper. Part of the look of a Macintosh computer is the airy, blue background. Apply the wallpaper to complete the effect.
Step9
Add the final details. If you want to go even further, there are programs like LogonStudio for creating custom logon screens and CursorXP for using custom mouse pointers (see Resources below). You can use these programs to finish turning your PC into a Mac.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's recommended that you don't overload the dock with things you'll never use as they will only make it harder to find the things you do use.
