Trying out for the basketball team can be a nerve-wracking experience--especially the first time you do it. If you come in to the tryout physically and mentally prepared to give it your all, you won't have to worry about making a bad first impression. Read on to learn how to try out for basketball without making a bad first impression.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice your fundamentals as much as you can. Shooting, dribbling and passing are what the game is about. Practice every day for at least half an hour.

  2. Step 2

Get in good shape. Being able to shoot is great, but if you can't get across the court quickly enough, you still won't make the cut. Jogging every day is a great way to get your cardiovascular system tuned up and ready to perform.

  3. Step 3

Spend some time preparing before the try out. Do stretches and some light cardiovascular exercise to warm up.

  4. Step 4

Prepare yourself mentally. If you have time, spend 10 minutes before you warm up imagining yourself having a great tryout. Mentally go over your own strengths and weaknesses and plan out how you are going to show the coach what you have got.

  5. Step 5

Don't show off. Trying out is about proving that you have the basic skills. It doesn't matter if you can do trick shots or fancy footwork, unless it helps to get the ball in the basket.

  6. Step 6

Hustle. The coach will probably work you very hard when you try out for basketball. If you are wiped out and dispirited, psyche yourself up again. Prove you have the determination to stick with it.

  7. Step 7

Do it for yourself. If you worry too much about how you look to others, your self-consciousness could make you choke. If you try to do your very best for you alone then you will be able to give it your all.
