A lot of people may not realize that there are actually proper methods of turning on a mountain bike. But just ask any pro mountain biker and they will tell that indeed, there is a right way to turn on your mountain bike. Use these steps to successfully execute a proper turn while mountain biking.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mountain bike
  • Riding surface
  • Balance
  1. Step 1

Make sure that your pedals are positioned properly. When you turn on a mountain bike you need to make sure that your pedals are positioned properly to avoid scraping them on the ground. It is rather simple. Whatever direction you are turning, make sure that the pedal on that side of the bike is all the way upwards; this way it does not hit the ground.

  2. Step 2

Learn the maneuver while stationary. You must lean into your turns when turning on a mountain bike otherwise you will lose your balance. While stationary lean the bike to the left and the right, practice shifting your weight the opposite direction that you lean, this will give you the best balance. Remember to keep that pedal upwards on the side that you are turning.

  3. Step 3

Attempt a proper turn at slow speeds. Now it is time to put it all in motion. Gain some speed and try turning slowly at first. Notice how when you shift your weight the opposite way but lean your handlebars into the turn how it creates both balance and momentum.

  4. Step 4

Practice turning to gain perfection. The more you practice the better that you will get. Keep turning and once you get the hang of it increase your speed. In no time at all you will be sweeping around corners like the pros.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice makes perfect.
