How to whittle a wooden knife
Whittling is a great way to pass the time, particularly on a camping trip. It requires nothing but a pocketknife and a stick you find lying around any campsite. Here's how to whittle a simple knife.

1
Find a stick. It should be thick enough that you can easily grip it, and at least long enough to accommodate a grip and a 3- to 4-inch blade.
-
2
Break off any parts of the stick you don't need.
-
-
3
Strip all the bark off with your pocketknife. While you're at it, trim away any knots in the wood that stick out.
-
4
Mark the boundary between the handle and the blade by making a perpendicular cut with your pocketknife.
-
5
Whittle down the blade on two sides so that it become thin and flat. This part takes a while. Keep going until it is an inch wide or less.
-
6
Whittle the blade of the knife into the desired shape. You can make it taper like a dagger or have one side curved like a cutting knife. When you are done, you should have something that looks like a knife without a sharp cutting edge.

Once you have shaped your wooden knife, it is time to sharpen it. Whittle the edge at an angle until it tapers to a fairly sharp cutting edge. You now have a stone-age weapon any caveman would be proud to call his own.

Tips & Warnings
You probably won't be able to get a really sharp edge simply by whittling. If you want to hone your blade further, use sandpaper or a rough rock.
