How to Use Aromatherapy to Reduce Stress

Stress is a part of daily life that can cause headaches, irritability and insomnia. While it is impossible to get rid of the stress of everyday life, you can relieve and reduce stress naturally using aromatherapy.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Carrier oil, like vegetable oil
  • Variety of relaxing essential oils like lavender, chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang and sandlewood
  1. Step 1

    Find a quiet place to relax. Keep lights dim and the temperature comfortable.

  2. Step 2

    Mix two tablespoons of vegetable oil with a combination of essential oils known for their calming effect. A good combination to try is two tablespoons of carrier oil mixed with four drops of lavender and two drops of ylang ylang.

  3. Step 3

    Apply the oil mixture to your temples, the base of your throat and the insides of your wrist. The areas where skin is thin will allow the heat of your body to disperse the scent.

  4. Step 4

    Inhale deeply and allow the stress of the day to leave your body as you exhale.

Tips & Warnings
  • Oils can have a different effect on different people, so experiment until you find a combination that works for you.
  • As an alternative to applying the oil to your skin, pour the mixture directly into your bath water.
  • Saturate a cotton pad with the oil and store it in a zippered plastic bag to carry with you. During stressful times, the pad can be used for fast stress relief.
  • Pure essential oils can cause serious skin irritation, so never apply to the skin without a carrier oil.
  • Pay attention to your body. If you have recurring headaches or insomnia, see a doctor.
