You want smooth, blemish-free skin, but you still get acne from time to time. Acne doesn't just afflict teenagers. Many adults suffer from this condition as well. Some cases are mild, while others are severe enough to require medication or the help of a dermatologist. Find out how you can reduce your breakouts and have clearer skin.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Facial cleanser
  • Toner
  • Moisturizer
  • Acne medication (optional)
  1. Step 1

Adopt a regular cleansing routine. There are many cleansers on the market. You should use products formulated for your skin type whether it's oily, dry or normal.

  2. Step 2

Wash your face twice a day: in the morning and before you go to bed. There are cleansers made specifically to treat acne which contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. If any of them work for you, use them only once or twice a day. More than that can be drying to your skin.

  3. Step 3

Exfoliate your skin with a gentle toner. If an acne-treating toner works for you, use it no more than twice a day.

  4. Step 4

Moisturize with a non-comedogenic moisturizer. There are moisturizers which contain acne-fighting ingredients, so if they work for your skin, use them.

  5. Step 5

Drink water and eat a healthy, balanced diet full of nutritious foods. While the jury is out on whether junk foods lead to acne, eating better is simply good for your health and your skin overall.

  6. Step 6

Use acne medication under a dermatologist's supervision.

  7. Step 7

Use spot treatment on acne as pimples erupt. Good spot treatments will dry pimples up within a day or two.

  8. Step 8

Use non-comedogenic cosmetics. Any cosmetics bearing this label do not block pores, which can contribute to acne.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash makeup off every night before bed. Sleeping in makeup can cause blocked pores, leading to acne.
  • Fighting acne can be tough; sticking to a cleansing routine and using the same products instead of switching it up all the time will help.
  • Finding the right products for you can be a matter of trial and error. Once you find something that works, stick with it.
  • Don't pick at pimples. This can make your acne worse and cause scarring.
