Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want to hold the traditional Hawaiian luau. Most luaus are held outdoors, as fire pits and tiki torches are often involved. Large backyards and beaches are great locations for your luau. Be sure to get permission to hold your party on the beach, though.

    • 2

Decide whether you want hula dance lessons or hula dancers at your luau. A great way to encourage guest participation is to exhibit traditional hula dances and have dancers pull guests up to join in. A great time to plan this activity is after cocktail hour, as people are more likely to loosen up and have some fun.

    • 3

Give every guest a lei, including the men. Take string or yarn and glue on fake flowers of all colors. Mix up colors to appeal to every style and gender. It's never a luau without a lei.

    • 4

Display fire pits and tiki torches. Hawaiian luaus are often held at night, as the light from the fire really adds to the ambiance. Place candles around your backyard and on tables. Maybe even hire a fire breather, a popular Hawaiian luau activity.

    • 5

Serve tropical drinks, such as Rum Runners and Mai Tai's. Give your adult guests a taste of the islands by using coconut rum and other tropical, fruity flavors. For the kids, make a giant punchbowl and float some fruits such as berries, bananas and pineapple in the bowl.

    • 6

Make traditional luau food. Roast pig is a great Hawaiian delicacy and most of your guests will love it. However, be sure to grill up some chicken, kabobs, and steak as well as providing tropical rice, fruit, salads and pineapple upside down cake. The more refreshing and fruity your menu is, the more tropical it will feel.

    • 7

Play Hawaiian music. Use a large stereo or hire a DJ to play slow, relaxing Hawaiian rhythms all night long. Encourage your guests to dance and enjoy the outdoor setting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always be careful around fire. Keep small children and pets away from tiki torches or firepits.

  • Find out if your guests have any food allergies to foods like pork or pineapple.

  • Go to a party store and see what luau decorations you can find.
