Practice! It’s obvious, but there are a few key ways you can practice that will really help you become a better player. Practice playing one on one against the computer at first, and as you become better add more opponents. When playing with multiple opponents start out in melee mode, where all of the enemies are not playing directly against you. In the beginning, it might help to use some key cheat codes so that you’re not under as much pressure. Start out using the cheat code to remove the fog of war and see the whole map. As you become better you will not need the cheat codes to practice. Using the cheat code for unlimited resources really helps you devote time to understanding other aspects of the game.

Learn the build times for all of the different races. Knowing how long it will take to make each building, creature, ship or structure will really help you know what you should focus on building and what you should focus on destroying. Also learn the order things must be built in.

Try different techniques or strategies. One of the computers favorite strategies is the rush. It will build up a big army of beings that don’t take a lot of minerals to build, and don’t do much damage by themselves, but if there is a whole lot of them they can do you or your opponent in, very quickly and early in the game.

Build attack teams that work together, and have backup teams. You can group attack teams together, using the control and number keys. If your playing Zerg, you might want to have a group of Mutalisks and a group of Guardians work together. Mutalisks can attack flying and ground objects but are not as powerful as Guardians. Guardians however, although they are powerful cannot defend against air attacks.

Build a good home base. You need a strong fortress that will survive a good attack, so that you will not be quickly eliminated. Don’t spend too much time on your base though or you will not have enough resources or time to build attack teams. When you build forward bases don’t build them up too strong, or you’ll again be wasting time and resources. Keep your one home base built up well and keep backup units there.
