There is much that can be said of the power of writing, and of writing non-fiction pieces. Whether you are beginning or advanced writer, non-fiction is the name of the game of if you want a steady income as a writer. It can be ad copy, like the direct mail pieces you make good money on. It can be an online article for a high-paying website. Or it can be a book. Somewhere around here is the non-fiction writing style. It doesn’t have to be original always, but your style will need to adapt—markets change. So if you want to find your non-fiction writing style, let this piece guide you down the road.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Willingness to write
  • Time to form a style
  • Patience with failure

Step1
Make a choice. You won’t learn anything just sitting in front of your computer, occasionally checking your email, writing when you think of something. You need to be willing to go in for the long haul. That makes making a choice. Do you really want to be a writer? There can be plenty of pressure, but also plenty of rewards. There is a myth that you can’t learn to write, that it comes from natural talent. In terms of fiction, maybe that’s true, but in terms of non-fiction, you will learn something every day.
Step2
Consider higher learning. In short, what a class can do is give you the basics and nothing more. There may even be some creative writing or magazine writing classes at your local challenge. It can help.
Step3
Learn as you go. So you are learning from day one. What do you do on day two? You must keep at it. Yes, some do sit in front of their computers with nothing original to say. You don’t have to be original, which is a huge lesson. Most ideas have already been thought of and written about. However, you as a person are unique. No, this isn’t about a self help book. But often you will be original by tapping into your own mind, which is like no one else’s. That is where your true writing style, fiction or non-fiction, will form. Learning as you go means harnessing these things over time.
Step4
Find ideas. Ideas are where you will form your non-fiction writing style. It’s not about going out of your way to see things—more going out of your way to write things down. Your ideas allow you to gage what you like to write about. A health writer who pens pieces on depression and schizophrenia has a unique take on this, usually, and often will write this important topic well.
Step5
Choose your themes. The theme of this article is on style. The way you write, for example, will differ from some and be comparable to others. You will need a theme. The idea of writing on depression is just the beginning; you will also need to say your opinion on the subject.

Tips & Warnings

  • Actually, writing fiction can improve your non-fiction style. Anything creative will help you think, so don’t think fiction is a waste—it helps you form new ideas and phrases.
  • There are thousands of career writers out there, making more money working from home than those who have desk jobs. All you need is a willingness to begin.
  • You will eventually get burned out. Don’t quit on forming your non-fiction writing style. As Stephen King said: "Writing is not like riding a bike, you can lose it."
