How to Tell if a Soda Bottle is Going to Explode

There is no surefire way to tell if a soda bottle is going to explode, but there are some tricks to make an educated guess. Here are a few tips to stop you from getting wet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look to see if it has been opened before. A soda bottle is much more likely to explode the first time it is opened. If it has already been opened, particularly if a significant amount has been consumed, you are in the clear.

    • 2

Squeeze it. A new bottle of soda should be firm, but still have a bit of give. If your soda bottle is rock hard, it is likely to explode when you open it.

    • 3

Look for ice crystals in the bottle. If your refrigerator is too cold, it can cause ice to form in your soda pop, making it much more likely to explode.

    • 4

Feel to see if it is cold enough. Warm soda is more volatile than cold soda. If it has been sitting in a hot car, do not open it, no matter what.

    • 5

Know the varieties of soda. Certain kinds, such as ginger ale, tend to be fizzier and more likely to foam up when you open them.

    • 6

Try to find out if it has been shaken, knocked over or otherwise disturbed. This can cause the carbon dioxide to come out of solution temporarily, making the soda bottle much more explosive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even an exploding soda bottle can usually be safely opened if you turn the cap slowly enough, giving excess gas plenty of time to escape.
