Human hair wigs, for all their benefits, don't come styled. But although styling one requires just as much effort, if not more, as maintaining your own hair, it also comes without the risks of having it permanently attached to your head. Read on to learn how to style a human hair wig.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brush your wig carefully, and free it of any knots.

  2. Step 2

Wash your wig, as gently as you can. Fill a bowl with warm water, add shampoo, and let the wig soak for about five minutes. Rinse the wig, from roots to ends, under running water. Add conditioner--twice or three times as much as you would for your own head--and leave for five or 10 minutes. Rinse again, gently, under running water.

  3. Step 3

It’s nigh-impossible to style a wig if it isn't attached to a head. Place your wig on a decent wig stand: either a 'poly head,' or a more durable cork head. Comb with a detangler comb, but only along the hair itself--not the base of the wig.

  4. Step 4

Unlike synthetic wigs, human hair wigs often come with more hair than necessary. While still wet, trim your wig to fit your preferences. This can be done without harming the hair.

  5. Step 5

Let your wig dry overnight on big rollers. But if you decide to use heat, hold a hair dryer, on low setting, about one foot from the wig. Be sure to circulate the heat evenly and continuously.

  6. Step 6

Either initially or as maintenance, dye your hair to your desired shade. An everyday home-dyeing kit work just fine, but use a color that's one or two shades lighter than the color you want. Wig hair is dry, and absorbs color much easier than hair which is still attached to a head.

Tips & Warnings
  • Only use salon products specifically designed for wigs. Other products may cause build-up, or needlessly dry out your wig.
