How to Tell if a Turtle is Male or Female

Whether you bought it or found it, either way you have this pet turtle. Unfortunately, you don't know what to name it, whether it's boy or girl, Johnny or Janey. While they may suffer at trying to win races, turtles are much better at showing signs as to their gender.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the claws. Male turtles have longer front claws. Females have shorter ones.

  2. Step 2

Look at the tail. Males have thicker and longer tails. Female turtle tails are shorter and not as fat.

  3. Step 3

Look at the bottom shell. A male turtle has a curved shell on the bottom. A female's bottom shell is flatter or may even protrude outward if it's mature enough.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful handling the turtle.
  • <br>Don't hold it upside down.

on 3/28/2009 Good info here! I really can't tell with my turtle and the vet couldn't either, so I named him/her "Pilgrim," which is gender-neutral.
