Ballet dancers make big jumps look so graceful, but that's because they know jumping techniques. With a few pointers you can perform your jumps with grace. Read on to learn how to perform jumps in ballet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Always begin and end your jumps in plie. Plies will help you gain greater heights and keep you from making a lot of noise when you land.

  2. Step 2

Keep your body alignment correct. Keep you shoulders back and your bottom tucked under. Don't arch your back. Correct body alignment will keep your jumps under control and concentrate your energy on height and position.

  3. Step 3

Don't allow your arms to counteract the movements of your legs. Your arms should complement the jump and even help your body to stay in line and gain momentum. Although jumps seem to be primarily leg movements, you can't do them properly if you forget about your arms.

  4. Step 4

Use the balls of your feet for landing and then round down to your heels. Practicing tendus will strengthen your feet so this motion will become automatic. Nothing causes more stage noise than heels landing before their time.

  5. Step 5

Practice lots of plies. The greater your leg strength, the more fantastic your jumps will be when you dance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Even though you may feel tired while you practice jumps, concentrate on good form. Good form will help your jumps immeasurably.
