1
Find a 5 qt. (20-cup) container that has a lid on it. Large coffee cans and plastic ice cream containers come in these sizes. Make sure that you clean the container out well with hot, soapy water and then rinse it well.
-
2
Mix half and half, heavy cream and milk together in a large mixing bowl. Stir together with a wooden spoon or plastic spatula.
-
-
3
Add vanilla extract and table salt to the bowl.
-
4
Pour the mixture from the bowl into your clean 5-qt. container and put the lid on.
-
5
Use duct tape to secure the lid to the container. Wrap the lid several times with tape so that you are sure it will not come off when shaken.
-
6
Set the taped container inside of your 5-gallon bucket and pack around it. Do this in batches of 1 cup rock salt and 4 cups of ice in each layer until you have used all of the ice and rock salt and you have tightly packed the 5-qt. container into the bucket.
-
7
Place the lid of the 5-gallon bucket on again and secure it with duct tape.
-
8
Get the kids involved by rolling the bucket around the yard for about 30 to 35 minutes. They will have fun rolling the bucket and knowing that they are helping to make dessert for everyone.
-
9
Remove the duct tape, take the lid off of the 5-gallon bucket and set aside. Do the same with the 5-qt. container. If it is frozen at the top then it is ready to serve; if it is still a little too runny, you can refasten the lids and roll for an additional 10 minutes.
-
10
Scoop ice cream into bowls and garnish with your favorite toppings. Enjoy the rewards of your labor.
