You want to make cookies, but you have idea how long those eggs have been sitting in the back of your fridge. Don't throw them away yet! It's easy to tell if an egg has gone bad or not.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bowl
  •
Water
  •
Egg
  1. Step 1

Fill a bowl with water, a little deeper than the egg's length.

  2. Step 2

Gently drop the egg into the bowl.

  3. Step 3

Watch what the egg does. Fresh eggs sink and lie on their side. Older eggs lie on the bottom, but bob slightly. Eggs that are about three weeks old stand on their head. Bad eggs will float to the top.

  4. Step 4

Still aren't sure? Crack the egg open. The built-up gas inside will release that unmistakable sulfur "rotten egg smell."

Tips & Warnings
  • Bad eggs float to the top because the pocket of air inside them gets bigger and bigger as they degenerate.
