Whether it's on the big screen or in print, boxing and other martial arts have been studied and displayed. While various fighting styles involve numerous moves and conditioning techniques, they do have several key concepts that the styles build themselves upon. One of these concepts is the cross punch. Simple but powerful, the cross is an excellent and necessary building block for anyone climbing in the ring or stepping on the mat. Follow these steps to throw a fundamentally sound cross.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Boxing gloves
  • <br>Hand wraps
  1. Step 1

Get into your fighting stance. Your feet should be shoulder width apart and you should be in a sideways stance. Both of your arms should be bent with your hands in fists and in front of your face. They should not be too high, blocking your vision and leaving your mid-section vulnerable. They shouldn't be too low either, exposing your face. You should be able to see over the top of your knuckles. Your knees should also be slightly bent. If you are right-handed, your right foot is in the back; if you are a lefty, your left foot is in the back.

  2. Step 2

Turn your hips and shoulders while extending your punch. The power of the cross will come from the turning of your waist and hips, not from your arms. Turn your hips and shoulders and follow through with the punch. The cross is the punch that comes from the rear arm. It will "cross" your body. The hand in front throws the jab.

  3. Step 3

Extend your back "cross" arm out as you turn. As your hips and shoulders turn, extend your arm and turn your fist so it is palm down. Make sure that your other hand remains in a guard position. You always want to have one hand protecting your face.

  4. Step 4

After the cross punch, bring the arm back and return to your beginning fighting stance. Keep your hands up and be prepared to throw another cross.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow through with your punch.
  • Be careful of over-extending your arm.
