Step 1
Buy a tuxedo. Shelling out $100 for a rental each time you attend a semi-formal event makes no sense. When buying a tuxedo, stick with the classic formal wear. A one- or two-button model will never go out of style.
-
Step 2
Wear a shirt with a conventional straight lay-down collar and French cuffs. A banded collar looks out of place at formal events.
-
Step 3
Learn how to tie a bow-tie. Never buy matching a patterned bow-tie with a cummerbund. It is better to wear a black bow-tie or straight tie. You can skip the cummerbund to achieve a cleaner, more modern look.
-
Step 4
Purchase a great pair of formal-wear shoes. Dress lace-up shoes will lend your tuxedo a more subdued look. Slip-on shoes will give an unconventional but an entirely appropriate look to your outfit.

Step 5
If you do wear a peak-lapel tuxedo jacket then you must wear a wing-collar shirt. Make sure the wings are tucked behind the bow-tie and not peeking out or above the tie.
