Step 1
Learn about the benefits of hiring a doula. According to DONA International, a worldwide doula organization, the length of labor is shorter, less pain medication is requested and fewer extra interventions such as cesarean section are necessary when women use the services of a doula. After childbirth, women who had a doula are less likely to experience postpartum depression and have an easier time breastfeeding.
-
Step 2
Locate a list of doulas. Speak with your medical provider, check local phone listings, or utilize an online resource such as the DONA International website or another doula locater.
-
Step 3
Make a list of questions to ask your potential doula. Important details to learn about potential doulas include education and experience, philosophy used in working with a woman during childbirth, and where services begin (home or hospital). Also find out if telephone consultations are provided prior to childbirth, if there is a backup doula available, what the fees are and what those fees include, and whether references are available.
-
Step 4
Interview doulas by telephone. Take notes on important details. During this step, eliminate candidates who do not have a similar philosophy or readily available references.
-
Step 5
Check certifications and references. Ensure the candidates have the experience necessary to provide quality services.
-
Step 6
Select the top three candidates and conduct in-person interviews. At this point in the process, the final candidates will likely be similarly qualified. When speaking with the doula in person, consider her communication style, personality and the likelihood that the doula will work well with your family.
-
Step 7
Make a decision to go with the doula who best suits your individual family after considering qualifications and comfort level with each doula.
